Repairs & fault-finding

Electric gate repairs.

If it has stopped

Gate not opening? We repair gates we didn’t install.

Most of the gates we are called out to were fitted by somebody else, often years ago, sometimes by a company that is no longer around. That is fine. We work on every major brand of automation and we would rather repair a system than sell you a new one you do not need.

Ring us on 01291 408804 and describe what the gate is doing. A lot of faults can be narrowed down over the phone, and a photograph or a short video of the gate trying to move tells us more than a paragraph of description. We will tell you what the call-out charge is before anyone is booked in — no engineer turns up without you knowing the cost.

We're based in Monmouthshire and cover South Wales, Bristol, Bath, Herefordshire and down to Weston-super-Mare.

Common faults

What is your gate actually doing?

Worth two minutes before you ring anyone. Some of these you can sort yourself, and we will say so rather than charging you to find out.

The gate is not opening at all

Usually power, the control board or a seized motor. Start with the isolator and the fuse — if the panel is dead, it is an electrical fault rather than a gate fault. Every system we fit has a manual release so you are never shut in while it is sorted.

It opens but will not close

Nine times out of ten this is a photocell. A dirty lens, a spider’s web, a knocked bracket or a wet connection is enough to make the gate think something is in the way. It is a safety device doing its job badly, not a broken motor.

One leaf moves and the other does not

A failed motor, a broken cable or a lost limit setting on that side. On a pair of gates the two motors work independently, so one can fail while the other carries on as normal.

The remote handset has stopped working

Try a second handset before anything else. If both are dead the receiver or aerial is the likely cause; if only one is, it is usually the battery or a lost code, and reprogramming takes minutes.

It moves slowly, judders or makes a noise it did not used to

Mechanical wear — hinges, bearings, a dropped leaf, or a track full of grit on a sliding gate. Left alone, the motors take the strain and fail sooner. This is the one worth catching early.

The intercom rings out or the picture has gone

On a GSM unit, check the SIM and the credit first. On a wired video system it is more often the cable run, the power supply or the indoor monitor than the gate station itself.

The gate has been hit

Impact damage bends leaves, shears hinges and cracks foundation boxes. Send us a photograph and we will tell you honestly whether it is a repair, a replacement leaf, or a full replacement.

It has stopped after a power cut or a storm

Control boards do not enjoy surges, and water finds its way into enclosures and underground motor boxes. Both are common on older installations and both are repairable.

What we repair

Motors, boards, safety gear and everything between.

Gate motor replacement, control board faults, photocells, intercoms, hinges and cabling. If it is part of an automated entrance, we work on it.

Brands we work on: Nice, CAME, BFT, FAAC, Beninca, DEA, Videx, Roger Technology, AES Global, Telguard, Hikvision and more.

  • Gate motors

Above-ground rams, underground motors and sliding-gate motors — repaired, or replaced where a repair would be throwing money at it.

  • Control boards

Fault-finding on the panel, replacement boards, and re-setting limits and force after the work is done.

  • Photocells & safety edges

The devices that stop the gate on an obstruction. Cleaned, realigned, rewired or replaced.

  • Intercoms & keypads

AES, Telguard, Videx and Hikvision systems, plus coded keypads and remote handsets.

  • Hinges, posts & tracks

Dropped leaves, worn bearings, damaged posts and blocked sliding tracks.

  • Cabling & power

Buried cable faults, water ingress, failed transformers and isolation points.

What it costs

Our call-out charges, published.

Diagnostic call-out: £216 including VAT, which covers attendance and the first hour from arrival at the premises. Any additional time is charged at £108 including VAT per hour, with replacement parts charged separately.

For commercial premises, chargeable time begins when we arrive on site and includes signing in, permits, inductions, travelling within the site and establishing a safe working area.

We would rather you knew that before you rang than found out afterwards. Most faults are diagnosed and put right inside the first hour, and where a part is needed we tell you what it is and what it costs before fitting it.

Stop it breaking instead

Most repairs we attend were avoidable.

Grit in a track, a dropped leaf, a photocell slowly going out of line — the faults that strand people are usually the ones a service would have caught. Our annual plan is £234 per gate system per year, including VAT, and it covers the full mechanical and electrical check, with the closing forces measured and recorded.
